RESOURCES FOR EDUCATORS

At Hanahau'oli School and the Professional Development Center, we continually strive to better understand and embody the tenets of progressive education. We share the following resources with the hopes that they will support you and your organization's pursuits of best practices in education.

Summer Institute  Our annual summer Institute is a 7-day seminar and practicum experience in the design of thematic units with an emphasis on engaging students in project-based learning. The institute seminars are taught by retired Head of School Dr. Robert G. Peters, PDC Director Amber Strong ’89 Makaiau, and a team of more than 10 experienced classroom teachers from Hanahau‘oli School. Learn more here.

Early Childhood STEM In partnership with the Samuel N. & Mary Castle Foundation, the PDC offers an annual workshop series with paid participation and travel stipends for early childhood educators in Hawai‘i who seek progressive and place-based approaches to early childhood Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) teaching and learning. A resource page dedicated to the workshop resources is openly available here, including a series of six short films presenting Hanahau‘oli’s unique approach to STEM education.

Social Justice Education The Hanahau‘oli PDC and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa College of Education jointly facilitate the Social Justice Education in Hawai‘i Project. Learn more about the expert-led university-level coursework, professional development workshops, public talks, and networking opportunities offered through this project, as well as scholarships and award opportunities also available to local educators here.

Online Program Recordings In response to the tremendous demands placed on educators during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Hanahau'oli PDC made recordings of a number of online programs available to all PDC email subscribers for personal viewing. View a list of recordings and request access here.
